Charles River Country Club

Charles River Country Club in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, is a private Donald Ross design that opened in 1921 and today plays 6,701 yards, par 72 (73.4/143) from the back tees; for championships the club converts to par 70 by playing Nos. 7 and 10 as par 4s. A long-running Ron Prichard restoration program—launched with a 1995 master plan—reopened playing corridors, expanded greens back to their original perimeters, and rebuilt grass-faced bunkers to period lines, sharpening the course’s angles without altering Ross’s routiing. Rather than relying on lakes, the test centers on elevation, exposed rock, and bold green sites—most famously the perched 9th—with the sweeping dogleg-left 18th finishing beneath the clubhouse without a water carry. The club remains an active championship venue, from hosting the 2017 Massachusetts Amateur to recent USGA qualifying (e.g., 2024 U.S. Women’s Amateur), and has been awarded the 2031 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur. Members warm up on a multi-tee, all-season 140,000-sq-ft grass range, a large short-game area, expansive putting greens by the 1st tee, and an indoor TrackMan simulator; the professional staff offers year-round instruction. The campus also features dining, pool, and racquet-sports amenities.
