Kahkwa Club

Set on gently rolling ground west of Erie in the Swanville section of Millcreek Township, the Kahkwa Club is a private, members-only facility whose 18 holes occupy both sides of Kahkwa Club Road. The course is a Ross layout completed in two stages during the late 1910s and subsequently updated by him in 1927; its present character is parkland, with modest elevation changes, frequent cross- and quartering winds off nearby Lake Erie, and a green complex-driven test that rewards placement over raw power. Practice facilities include a full driving range with target greens, multiple practice putting greens, and a short-game area of roughly three acres with two dedicated greens and bunkers; the club also offers tennis and an aquatic center alongside the golf program. Today the course plays as a par 72 with multiple tee options; the longest published current setup runs in the mid-6,600-yard range, and the club’s hole-by-hole tour highlights named holes such as “Pond” (No. 3), “Long Tom” (No. 12), “School House” (No. 13), and “The Elbow” (No. 16). Kahkwa is an active championship venue, having staged the 1971 U.S. Women’s Open, the 2004 U.S. Women’s Amateur, and the 2016 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, among other notable regional events.
