Memphis Country Club

Memphis Country Club occupies a compact, near-square tract in Midtown Memphis, where its private 18-hole course plays today at roughly 6,700 yards (par 70) from the back tees. The club presents a full-service environment—historic clubhouse, dining (including the recently added “1905 Restaurant & Bar” and the Ross Room), and a modern racquets complex with indoor tennis and pickleball—alongside a traditional golf experience on tree-lined fairways with crowned, well-defended greens. Practice accommodations and a classic walking cadence remain part of the daily rhythm; there are no water hazards in play save for a shallow drainage swale that crosses the property. The club has hosted four USGA championships—the 1937 and 1979 U.S. Women’s Amateurs, the 1948 U.S. Amateur, and the 1959 U.S. Senior Amateur—which underscores both the course’s challenge and its enduring operational focus on tournament readiness. The setting is urban and intimate: holes work around the perimeter and through two interior loops, so players sense activity nearby while the routing constantly changes direction, creating variety within a small footprint. The membership is private. Course information published by the club emphasizes continuity of the basic layout since the early 20th century, with periodic infrastructure and landscape updates and a recent restoration program aimed at recapturing original green sizes and bunker forms.
