Mountain Ridge Country Club

Mountain Ridge Country Club sits on 280-plus acres in West Caldwell, New Jersey, roughly 25 miles west of midtown Manhattan. It is a private club centered on a 1931 Donald Ross course that rises and falls over broad ground with long views back to its fieldstone clubhouse by Clifford C. Wendehack. The course today plays as a pair of returning nine-hole loops, each finishing with an uphill hole to the clubhouse. Fairways are wide by metropolitan standards, bunkers are positioned to influence lines of play rather than simply frame them, and green surrounds are closely mown, bringing run-offs and recovery options into daily play. Practice facilities occupy a central saddle between the nines and include a full range with target greens, a short-game area, and an indoor learning center. Membership play is supported by active tournament hosting—most notably the 2012 U.S. Senior Amateur and the 2021 LPGA Cognizant Founders Cup—alongside a calendar of Met Area championships. The course’s present character reflects a long, evidence-based restoration program that widened fairways to Ross-scale corridors, reinstated lost green corners, and, in a few specific cases, refined hazards and water to enliven flatter ground—all while leaving Ross’s routing intact.
