Penobscot Valley Country Club

Penobscot Valley Country Club sits along the Penobscot River in Orono, just north of Bangor, on gently rolling sandy loam that drains well and catches frequent river breezes. Today it operates with public access (semi-private/member-preferred in some listings), anchored by an 18-hole, par-72 course, a full practice range and short-game/putting areas, and a modern clubhouse (rebuilt in 2001 and subsequently updated). The routing is compact and walkable, with corridors that open to wind and a set of small-to-medium greens that put a premium on approach control more than raw length. Current back-tee yardage falls in the mid-6,400s (some cards show ~6,445; others list set-ups between ~6,320 and ~6,607 depending on tee set and rating updates). After ownership changes in the late 2010s and again in 2025, the course has continued maintenance and incremental improvements, with recent owners emphasizing preservation of Ross characteristics while keeping daily-play conditions firm and fair. Players encounter a “links-like” presentation for inland Maine—open sightlines, stout par-3s, and “devilishly quick” Ross greens when speeds are up—with a finishing stretch that rewards positional discipline more than forced carries.
