Rackham Golf Course

Rackham Golf Course occupies gently rolling ground along West Ten Mile Road in Huntington Woods, immediately north of Detroit and directly adjacent to the Detroit Zoo. As a public 18-hole facility owned by the City of Detroit and operated under the GolfDetroit/Troon umbrella, it offers an Albert Kahn–era clubhouse, a putting and chipping green, leagues, and the long-running Detroit Open municipal championship. The course plays par 71 at roughly 6,555 yardsfrom the back tees, with middle and forward options at 6,253 and 5,413 yards, respectively. There are no water hazards; strategy turns on angles into small, often back-to-front sloped greens guarded by numerous bunkers that were rebuilt in the 2000s. Routing-wise, the outward half runs closest to I-696 and the zoo perimeter, while the inward half occupies the quieter north and east portions of the property before returning to the clubhouse. Daily-fee access and the location in a dense inner-ring suburb make Rackham one of Detroit’s most heavily used historic courses; the club and city highlight the venue’s civil rights heritage through the career of longtime professional Ben Davis and the course’s association with Joe Louis.
