Shaker Heights Country Club

Shaker Heights Country Club sits eight miles east of downtown Cleveland, in the streetcar suburb that the Van Sweringen brothers developed around the Shaker Lakes. The private club centers on a 1915 Donald Ross course that threads through mature parkland cut by the South Branch of Doan Brook, with the clubhouse—by Cleveland architect Frank B. Meade—presiding from the property’s highest ground. Today members find an 18-hole course with a full practice range, putting green and two short-game areas, along with racquets, fitness, aquatics, and active social and dining programs. Routing and corridors remain compact within a tight neighborhood footprint; water and the creek’s floodplain still influence tactics on multiple holes, while tree management and periodic renovations have kept playing widths and sightlines evolving. The club hosts member and regional events and has a prominent place in Northeast Ohio golf; in the early 1980s it staged four consecutive editions of the LPGA’s World Championship of Women’s Golf. Course ratings list it in the mid-6,600 to ~6,700-yard range from the back tees, typically playing to par 71–72 depending on setup; the club publishes its current scorecard on its website.
