Shelby Park Golf Course
Shelby Golf Course occupies rolling ground on the north side of Shelby Park in East Nashville, three miles from downtown along the Cumberland River. The municipal facility operates under Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation and presents an 18-hole layout with a compact routing, moderate elevation change, and a blend of mid-length par fours and reachable par fives that keep rounds moving for public play. The clubhouse sits near Lake Sevier and anchors core amenities—a small practice green, limited warm-up space, and a straightforward pro-shop operation aimed at daily-fee golfers. The course is public, with online tee times and walk-up availability typical of Nashville’s muni system. In 2024–25 the city and the Tennessee Golf Foundation invested in turf, irrigation, and clubhouse upgrades, and the course now plays to approximately 6,079 yards (par 72) from the back tees. Visitors today encounter a century-old parkland setting framed by mature hardwoods rather than vast hazards; recent work emphasized drainage, resurfaced greens and approaches, and basic infrastructure improvements rather than wholesale architectural change. Importantly for a Ross directory entry, Shelby’s historic authorship has been contested in recent scholarship; while many local references have long credited Donald Ross, the surviving documentary trail indicates that the 1924 course built for the city followed Tom Bendelow’s plans, not Ross’s. This narrative therefore focuses on what can be documented about Ross’s involvement (planning) versus what was actually constructed (Bendelow’s field work), and how that history affects the course one plays today.
