Shennecossett Municipal GC

Set on a low, windswept peninsula where the Thames River meets Long Island Sound, Shennecossett Municipal Golf Course in Groton, Connecticut, is today a busy public facility with a traditional clubhouse, pro shop, practice putting green, and the on-site Par Four Restaurant that overlooks the finishing hole. Tee sheets are open to the public, with resident and non-resident passes administered by the Town of Groton. The course plays over gently rolling, largely treeless ground with exposure to coastal breezes; the modern routing culminates in a scenic stretch above the water where submarines from the nearby Naval Submarine Base and the Coast Guard barque Eagle can sometimes be seen underway. While Shennecossett has hosted state championships and countless exhibitions over more than a century, the everyday experience remains muni-accessible: walkable corridors, modest green-to-tee connections, and a compact property where most playing corridors remain in view. From the longest tees, Shennecossett is a par 71 of roughly 6,560 yards, with a reputation for firm, fast summer conditions that make short grass, wind and angled approach play more determinative than raw yardage.
