St. Charles Country Club
St. Charles Country Club occupies a bend of the Assiniboine River on Winnipeg’s west side, with 27 holes arranged as three distinct nines. It is a private members’ club with a substantial clubhouse, a modern “Practice/Performance” complex, and—since 2024—a riverside Sitwell-inspired short-game area and putting course. Golf is organized in rotating 18-hole combinations; the Ross nine (restored in 2024) and the MacKenzie nine (restored in 2023) typically provide the principal 18, while the Thompson Nine—until its 2024–2026 rebuild the Woods nine, Norman Woods’s 1954 redesign of Ross’s second 1919 nine, re-created in Stanley Thompson’s style by Riley Johns and Keith Rhebb and renamed in Thompson’s honour ahead of a late-summer 2026 opening—provides additional capacity and variety. The playing experience today emphasizes firm bentgrass surfaces, widened fairways, and returned Golden-Age contours. Strategy—not just length—drives scoring, with diagonal bunkering, perched targets and short-grass runoffs back in service after a multi-year historical restoration directed by Jim Urbina (with shaping leadership from Riley Johns). Tournament set-ups have shown the course’s flexibility: across different combinations it has hosted a Canadian Open (PGA Tour), an LPGA major (du Maurier Classic), and the 2010 Canadian Women’s Open. Day-to-day, members encounter a compact, walkable routing whose character visibly shifts across the Ross and MacKenzie nines while remaining coherent as one club course.
