The Steel Club

Set on the hills above Saucon Valley in Hellertown, The Steel Club is a private club whose golf now centers on its 18-hole Championship course and full practice grounds (including a modern TrackMan range). The Championship 18 stretches to just under 7,000 yards at par 72, pairing nine surviving Donald Ross holes (1–2 and 12–18) with nine by William and David Gordon (3–11); the most memorable defense is the contour of the greens and the way a modest interior stream influences choices on the inward side. The club’s separate Ross nine — the Hill Nine, routed up and down a wooded slope — fell out of play in the late 2010s, and its hillside now carries a nationally ranked 18-hole disc golf course and the Ross Hill residential development. Day to day the club presents firm, closely mown surrounds when weather allows, and Steel Club regularly hosts association qualifiers, confirming that the course can be set to exacting standards without resorting to narrow corridors or excessive hazards. While the club’s name and ownership have changed over time — Bethlehem Steel Club, then Silver Creek Country Club, and since 2018 The Steel Club once more — the present-day golf experience still turns on strategic angles, pronounced putting surfaces, and a routing that shifts pace and direction between valley floor and hillside.
