Washington Golf & Country Club

In North Arlington along North Glebe Road, Washington Golf & Country Club (WGCC) occupies steep, fold-heavy terrain a few miles from the Potomac. The club is private, with a full-service clubhouse (rebuilt in 2006) and racquet, swim and fitness programs; golf amenities include short-game space and a practice range suited to the compact property. A comprehensive renovation by Tom Doak/Renaissance Golf Design (Eric Iverson, lead) reopened in 2019–20 with all new greens, tees and bunkers and modest routing adjustments; the club added a halfway facility and learning space known as “The Turn.” From everyday back markers the course plays as a par 70 a little above or below 6,300 yards depending on setup; the club notes a tournament configuration “over 6,400 yards” following the 2020 works. Elevation changes are constant and corridors are snug, so approach control and precise positioning into small, pitched greens dominate the playing experience. Though subsequent architects left their mark, Ross’s hand remains visible on select holes and in the compact, varied cadence that still governs early and late in the round.
