Wellesley Country Club

A few miles west of Boston, Wellesley Country Club occupies rolling, wooded ground along Wellesley Avenue. The club is private, with a full-service clubhouse and a busy tournament calendar; golf amenities include a driving range, practice greens, and (since 2017) an on-property short course used for player development and casual play. The 18-hole course presents multiple tee configurations; the current Black card stretches to 6,903 yards at par 70, while other tees (e.g., White) play 6,338 yards at par 71, reflecting a front-nine par shift on certain sets. Day-to-day, players see a New England parkland with water in strategic but sparing use, pronounced back-to-front green pitch on several holes, and a mixture of long par-4s (notably the 6th and 14th) and demanding one-shotters (2nd and 15th). The club highlights a lineage of work by Donald Ross, Wayne Stiles & John Van Kleek, and Geoffrey Cornish, with modernization by Mark Mungeam in preparation for hosting the 2010 Massachusetts Open; subsequent maintenance programs keep green speeds and surrounds at levels that make “below the hole” a recurring local refrain.
