Wentworth-by-the-Sea Golf Club

Set on the narrow strand between New Castle and Rye, Wentworth-by-the-Sea Country Club occupies low, seaside ground exposed to the Atlantic and the tidal Piscataqua, so wind direction can change the golf from hour to hour. The club is private. Members today find a compact, walkable par-70 with six par-3s, eight par-4s, and four par-5s, plus a full practice range with grass and artificial stations by the first tee, a short-game and putting green, and a three-hole “Seaside Course” used for family golf and clinics. Hole markers and the club’s own course tour emphasize placement over power—e.g., a 293-yard 10th, multiple mid-length par-3s into crosswinds, and short par-5s that are reachable only when the breeze cooperates. Current published ratings list a Blue set totaling 5,795 yards at par 70 (Blue CR/Slope 67.7/128), with shorter White, Gold and Red options. The club’s website identifies the course lineage as an 1897 hotel links later rebuilt by Donald Ross and expanded to 18 holes by Geoffrey Cornish in 1964, with subsequent modernizing work.
