Western Golf and Country Club

Western Golf & Country Club sits in Redford Township, immediately west of Detroit, on rolling ground divided by the Middle Rouge River. Today it functions as a member-owned private club with a rebuilt, three-level clubhouse that opened in 2021 after a 2018 fire, and with full amenities: an expansive range, short-game areas (including chipping, putting and sand practice), pool and racquet facilities, indoor simulators, and active golf and social calendars. The 18-hole course is presented in a mature parkland setting with river crossings, several elevated tees and greens, and corridors framed by long-established hardwoods. The club is currently undertaking a multi-year, $4.7 million restoration led by Andrew Green (A.H. Green Design), scheduled through 2026, with a new irrigation system, bunker/tee/drainage work, fairway expansion and selective tree management occurring in phases to keep most of the course in play. The membership emphasizes the continuity of the original 1927 routing by Donald Ross while acknowledging later alterations; Green’s plan is positioned as a comprehensive master plan for the nearly century-old design. Visitors encounter a strategic par-72 whose character is shaped by the Rouge, diagonal bunkering, and compact greens, and a club that continues to host significant state events (including the 2026 Michigan Amateur).
