Whitemarsh Valley Country Club

Set along the rolling meadows and wooded ridges of Lafayette Hill, just northwest of Philadelphia, Whitemarsh Valley Country Club today plays as a private, 18-hole course with a full suite of practice amenities: a driving range, multiple short-game and chipping areas, and a large putting green, plus an indoor simulator for offseason work. The property is bisected by tributaries tied to the Wissahickon, and elevation change shapes a round that alternates valley floors with exposed plateaus. From its longest tees Whitemarsh is a par-72 with modern yardage just under 6,900 yards; daily play commonly encounters swift, firm surfaces and tree-framed corridors that widen at landing zones. The club’s golf identity is also anchored in tournament legacy—the PGA Tour’s Philadelphia/IVB Classic visited annually from 1963 through 1980—so members encounter a course groomed for crisp definition and recoverable short grass around greens. The current presentation reflects a mid-2010s renovation by Andrew Green that rebuilt bunkers, enlarged and recaptured putting surfaces, and opened internal vistas through selective tree work, all while acknowledging that the architecture on the ground blends George C. Thomas Jr.’s original routing with subsequent interventions by William Flynn and, centrally for this entry, Donald Ross.
