Allegheny Country Club

Allegheny Country Club is a private club at 250 Country Club Road in Sewickley, in the Sewickley Heights hills northwest of Pittsburgh. The club, founded in 1895 on Pittsburgh's North Side, has played here since 1902 and calls itself a family-centric club with sport, recreational and social programs. Golf is for members and their guests. The 18-hole course is par 70 and measures 6,625 yards from the Black tees, with Allegheny, Blue, Blue/White and White tees down to 4,987 yards from the Red; women play it as a par 71, with the 16th a par 5. The ground is hilly. Reviewers describe the front nine as a quirky, lay-of-the-land routing and the back nine as more open, with wide views, and describe greens with plenty of slope. Blind shots are common, and fescue lines many holes. The course is the work of several hands: Tom Bendelow's 1902 layout, reshaped by Donald Ross over three decades and later by Ed Seay. Gil Hanse is now restoring it. His work so far includes new bunkering, tree removal around the 3rd and along the 17th and 18th, and a rebuilt 12th with a new green. The round starts beside the clubhouse, includes a 219-yard downhill par 3 at the 3rd and a 606-yard par 5 at the 10th, and returns uphill to the clubhouse at the 16th, the hardest hole on the men's card.
