The Volcano: Ross's uphill par 3 over Shobers Run

Ross built this par 3 in 1923, and it is stroke index 1 today at 223 yards from the Medal tees. From the back tee the line crosses Shobers Run and its tree-lined banks about 60 yards out, then climbs open rough to a green set on a foothill that early accounts put 40 feet above the tee. The green is longer than it is wide and points straight back down the line. Four bunkers frame it, two on each side, with the front pair flanking the entrance. A cart path and trees run down the right. The resort's guide calls the putting surface narrow and two-tiered.
