Benvenue Country Club

Rocky Mount, North Carolina

About Benvenue Country Club

Benvenue Country Club is a private club on Southern Boulevard in Rocky Mount, about five minutes off I-95, on 118 acres of gently rolling land in eastern North Carolina. Its 18-hole course, which the club calls its original Donald Ross layout, plays to par 72 and 6,519 yards from the Gold tees, with several shorter sets down to about 4,400 yards. Old pines line most of the fairways, and a line of pines planted along the property line marks out of bounds where the course meets the road. A creek and a chain of ponds cross the middle of the property below the clubhouse and come into play on the 13th, 14th and 18th. The greens are small and fast, which the club calls the course's signature; they have been Champion Bermudagrass since 2006. The greenside bunkers were rebuilt to Ross's drawings ahead of the club's 2022 centennial. The course is used for state and national qualifying: the Carolinas Golf Association has run U.S. Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifiers here, and the 2022 North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship was played here. Golf runs year-round, with men's and women's golf associations, twilight events and instruction from the professional staff. Other facilities include a driving range and practice area, a golf shop, seven lighted clay tennis courts, a junior Olympic pool, a fitness room and a clubhouse with dining rooms, banquet space and lounges.

Donald Ross at Benvenue Country Club

Benvenue Country Club and its golf course were established together in 1922. The club took its name from Benvenue, the Bunn family's house on Southern Boulevard, built in 1844 and remodelled in 1889 by Benjamin H. Bunn, who served in Congress. The National Register nomination for the house records that the club's 1922 clubhouse was built on land previously owned by Benjamin Bunn.

Donald Ross drew the plan. Ken Burnette, a two-time club president and the club's de facto historian, told Sports Illustrated in 2021 that "we paid Ross for the architectural drawing, but we didn't have the money to put all that into place back then," and that comparing later aerial photographs with the plan showed "a lot was never put in place." A 1922 Ross plan of Benvenue was posted on Golf Club Atlas in 2018. No source read describes whether Ross visited the site in 1922.

The course opened with sand greens and kept them for more than two decades. In 1946 the club formed a green grass committee, which decided to convert the greens to turf and began plans for an irrigation system; the club's own history says the greens were rebuilt as grass greens that year. Golf Club Atlas's list of Ross's work records a Ross remodel at Benvenue in 1946, and GolfPass credits Ross for 1922 and 1946; the club's account names only the committee. Some years after construction the club planted small pines at regular intervals around the property line, and that line of trees now marks out of bounds.

Holes to Know

From the Gold tees the course measures 6,519 yards, par 36-36-72: ten par 4s, four par 3s and four par 5s. The par 3s are the 2nd, 9th, 13th and 17th, and the par 5s the 3rd, 4th, 10th and 15th, with the 507-yard 3rd and the 546-yard 4th back to back early in the round.

The 546-yard 4th from the Gold tees, stroke index 7, is the longest hole on the course. It bends gently left, and a continuous line of pines runs the full right side with a road beyond it. GolfPass notes out of bounds down that whole side. Two bunkers sit on the left at about 270 and 285 yards, two more on the left about 80 yards short of a narrow green, and two on the right against the pines about 100 to 115 yards out. Three bunkers surround the green: front left, right and back right.

The 300-yard 8th from the Gold tees, stroke index 17, is the shortest par 4. A ditch crosses at about 115 to 130 yards, and the fairway turns sharply right at about 205 yards around a stand of trees, with two bunkers on the inside of the corner at about 190 and 200 yards.

The 160-yard 13th from the Gold tees is the shortest par 3. A pond crosses the whole line from about 85 to 55 yards short of the green and curls up its left side, and the clubhouse sits just beyond.

The 441-yard 14th from the Gold tees, stroke index 2, is the longest par 4. It starts below the clubhouse over the same pond system and runs straight up a corridor of pines to an oval green with a single bunker on its right.

The 348-yard 16th from the Gold tees is the hole GolfPass names as one of the hardest, for a green it describes as a plateau about four feet above the fairway. Today the green is long and narrow, angled from back left to front right, with three bunkers across its front.

Ross's Design Here

What is documented as Ross's here is the 1922 plan and the course built from it, which the club describes as its original 18 holes on the same 118 acres. Burnette's account makes Benvenue a course where the plan and the ground differed from the start: the club bought the full drawing but built only what it could pay for, and the gap was visible when later aerials were laid over the plan.

The greenside bunkers are the part of Ross's design the club has gone back to. Working from the architectural drawings and from old aerials and photographs, the club rebuilt 42 greenside bunkers. Burnette described the change he found in the record this way: "bunkers that used to be a third of a green grew to be two-thirds." After the work he said, "We are closer to the Ross intent on greenside bunkers than we've ever been." On today's aerials the greenside sand on the 8th, 13th and 16th sits at the front and sides of the greens, with three bunkers across the front of the 16th.

The greens are small. The club calls small, fast greens "a Benvenue signature" and describes "speedy greens with undulating breaks"; the measured greens average about 3,800 square feet. Their surfaces date from the 1946 and 2006 rebuilds rather than from 1922. The creek and ponds that cross the middle of the property below the clubhouse shape the 13th, 14th and 18th today; no source read says how much of that water Ross used.

Historical Significance

Benvenue was not included in Ross's 1930 booklet of his courses, according to the Golf Club Atlas list, which records it as an 18-hole Ross design new in 1922. It is one of the Ross courses of eastern North Carolina, a region where, a longtime member told the Rocky Mount Telegram in 2017, a number of private clubs had closed.

The club's championship record goes back at least to 1955, when the Carolinas Amateur was played at Benvenue and Dave Smith Jr. of Gastonia beat P.B. Gravely of Rocky Mount 2 and 1 in the final. The Carolinas Golf Association held the North Carolina Senior Four-Ball here in 2008 and again in 2017, its fifth championship at the club. The 2022 North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship was played here in June 2022, with Leah Edwards beating Nicole Nash 1 up on the last green. The club has hosted U.S. Amateur sectional qualifying in 2015, when Carter Jenkins was medalist at 10 under over 36 holes, and in 2022, when Jackson Van Paris was medalist at 134, and U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying in August 2023. AmateurGolf.com lists the June 2026 Golfweek Senior National at Benvenue and describes the event as returning to the club.

The North Carolina Golf Panel ranked Benvenue No. 94 in the state in 2023. It is not on the Panel's Top 100 published in April 2026.

The club celebrated its 95th anniversary in September 2017, when Kate Honey was its first woman president, and its centennial in 2022, with events leading up to September 22, 2022, organised by a committee under former president Sylvia Harriss. Longtime member Bob League wrote Ross articles for the club newsletter, going back through the minutes of old meetings.

Changes Since Ross

The first change was the 1946 conversion from sand greens to grass with new irrigation. Whether Ross had a hand in it is open (see Uncertainties).

The greens were converted again in 2006, to Champion Bermudagrass. The club's general manager described it to the Rocky Mount Telegram in 2017 as one of the club's riskier moves; a longtime member said the club had got out in front of other southern clubs.

The pines along the property line were added some years after the course opened and now define out of bounds on the boundary holes such as the 4th. Over the years, Sports Illustrated reported, erosion and mowing patterns altered the course from its original intent.

Ahead of the centennial, with Kris Spence consulting and Land Innovations doing the work, the club rebuilt 42 greenside bunkers in accordance with Ross's drawings; the work was finished by August 2021 and timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary. No source read describes fairway bunker work, rerouting or added holes.

Uncertainties

• Ross in 1946: Golf Club Atlas's Ross list and GolfPass credit Ross with a 1946 remodel, the list citing a November 1945 Pinehurst Outlook report of his current projects. The club and Sports Illustrated attribute the 1946 grass-greens decision to a club committee. This listing treats Ross's 1946 role as unconfirmed.

• The 1922 plan: Burnette says the club paid Ross for the drawing, and a 1922 plan was posted on Golf Club Atlas, but no source read names the archive that holds it.

Our family has really enjoyed BCC. We are lucky to have a place with great food, great events, and great golf (according to my husband). The pool is really the selling point for me -- it's a wonderful spot to bring the kids all season long. If you're new to the area and/or have a young family, this is a wonderful place to make friends and enjoy what Rocky Mount has to offer.
