This was Travis's opening hole, beside the Kirkwood Hotel, and Ross's plan lengthened it from a par 4 to a par 5. From tees set right of the line, the drive crosses sandy native ground, about 100 yards from the forward tees and nearer 120 from Tee 4, to a fairway that runs straight with no fairway bunkers. The railroad runs down the left, 30 to 45 yards from the fairway's centre behind a single row of trees, and a tree line closes the right. The last 100 yards swing right to a long oval green, about 33 yards deep and 20 wide, with a bunker along its front-left and another short-right.
