Cape Fear Country Club

Cape Fear Country Club is a private club on Country Club Road in Wilmington. Founded in 1896, it describes itself as the oldest private country club in North Carolina, and its clubhouse has been rebuilt four times since 1900. The 18-hole, par-72 course measures 6,940 yards from the Gold tees, with tee sets down to 4,857 yards from the Reds. The course moves over gently rolling, pine-framed ground, and a creek and several ponds come into play, most visibly on the 4th, the 13th and the 14th. The 10th through 12th run between houses. The holes change direction constantly on the front nine, and the round ends on a short par 4 back to the clubhouse. The greens and bunkers were rebuilt in 2018-19 by Andrew Green. He lowered every green and converted them from bentgrass to ultradwarf bermuda, and rebuilt the bunkers at modest depths. Low green surrounds make a running approach possible on most holes. Green also built a nine-hole par-3 course next to the practice area, played to four double greens and one single green with no fixed tees and holes of roughly 65 to 135 yards. Members also have racquet sports, a pool, a fitness center, dining, youth programs and a social calendar. The club regularly hosts Carolinas Golf Association championships, including the Carolinas Amateur in 2020.
