Country Club of Mobile

The Country Club of Mobile is a private, member-owned club in the Spring Hill area of Mobile, organized in 1897 and on its present site since 1914. The golf offering is an 18-hole course credited to Donald Ross and a nine-hole executive course, with a practice area, a teaching facility and a pro shop. Club life also includes dining, tennis, aquatics and fitness, and the clubhouse has stood since 1927. The 18 is a par 70 of 7,063 yards from the Blue tees, with four par 3s and only two par 5s. The property has more than 100 feet of elevation change, unusual on the Gulf Coast, and falls from the clubhouse toward a large pond and a concrete-lined creek. The pond is carried on the tee shots of the par-3 12th and the par-5 17th, and the creek channel runs alongside the 16th, a 501-yard par 4. The course was renovated in 2018 by Jerry Pate and design associate Steve Dana, with guidance from the Donald Ross Society, after Brad Klein reviewed the course for the club. The work rebuilt the greens, which are large and undulating with short grass around them, and re-routed part of the course. The rough is bahiagrass. The club has hosted the Labor Day Invitational, a regional amateur event, for more than 75 editions.
