Detroit Golf Club - North
Occupying a leafy rectangle on Detroit’s north side near the University of Detroit Mercy, Detroit Golf Club’s is a private, walkable parkland layout that still plays over the gentle ridges and shallow swales Donald Ross exploited when the club commissioned two eighteens in the mid-1910s. The North is the longer championship course used for most major club competitions and—via a composite routing—hosted the PGA TOUR’s Rocket Classic from 2019 through the event’s final edition in 2026, when the restored course debuted as a par-70 tournament setup. Members find a full-service facility anchored by Albert Kahn’s 1918 clubhouse, a practice range adjacent to the opening holes, short-game and putting areas, a well-stocked professional shop, and seasonal aquatics, tennis, and dining amenities. From the back tees the North long presented a par-72 test with strategic bunkering that narrows preferred angles into elevated or canted greens; water is largely absent, with diagonal swales and restored fossé drainage channels doing much of the strategic work. The 2025–26 restoration lengthened the course to 7,104 yards from the Gold tees while keeping the member card at par 72 (73 from the forward tees); the 2026 tournament’s composite setup played at par 70. Every hole carries a Ross-era name, from “Freight Train” to “Hades.” The everyday experience emphasizes precise placement into firm, moderately contoured targets rather than forced carries, with the finish framed by a demanding par-4 eighteenth whose green is among the most exacting on the property.
