Essex County Club
Set on granitic uplands half a mile from tidewater, Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea presents a walking par-70 that asks for flighted approaches, deft lag putting, and comfort with uphill and downhill stances. The club today operates as a private members’ club with clubhouse dining, racquets facilities, and a full tournament calendar for men and women; it also hosts state and national competitions on a recurring basis. The golf course occupies a rugged, heaving landscape where outcrops and ledges frame corridors without the need for earthmoving. Two par fives on the outward nine and none on the inward side define the rhythm, while a sequence over the “mountain” near the finish compresses elevation change into strategic half-shots—most notably at 17 and 18—without resorting to forced carries. Greens are compact, often pitched or tilted into their surrounds, and several sit on natural benches with runoffs shaved to short grass. The club’s own materials and outside reporting underscore that the current routing and green sites largely express the phase of work Donald Ross executed while living on the property, with recent restoration sharpening sightlines, re-expanding greens, and thinning trees to let wind and firm turf reassert their role.
