Maketewah Country Club

Set within Cincinnati’s Bond Hill neighborhood at 5401 Reading Road, Maketewah Country Club presents an urban Ross-era course on a compact, rolling site cut by a series of ravines. The club operates as a private facility with a full clubhouse and an active golf program; recent work has focused on golf-first upgrades, including a modernized practice complex and a 2½-acre short-game area installed in 2012, plus an indoor practice facility used in partnership with nearby Xavier University. Players today encounter an 18-hole course whose routing still hews closely to Donald Ross’s work for the club in 1919–21 and again in 1929, with both nines finishing unconventionally on par-3 holes—most memorably the closing shot across a deep ravine to the 18th green. Course conditions reflect a 2022–23 restoration by architect Brian Silva that expanded fairways, renewed bunkering and regrassed tees and fairways to support consistent play through Cincinnati’s humid summers. The club remains a frequent host of U.S. Open Local Qualifying, underscoring Maketewah’s continuing role as a competitive test within the city limits.
