Sara Bay Country Club

Sara Bay Country Club occupies gently rolling ground just north of downtown Sarasota, Florida, within the historic Whitfield Estates/airport corridor and a few minutes from Sarasota Bay. It is a private, member-owned club with an 18-hole course that today plays as a compact, walkable par 72 a touch over 7,000 yards from the back tees, supported by a full practice range and short-game/putting facilities. The current clubhouse sits directly behind the eighteenth green, giving the finish a classic amphitheater backdrop. In day-to-day play the course emphasizes angles and precise approach play into firm, perched targets, with creeks and lakes crossing or flanking several holes on each side. Bunker placement—not simply bunker count—governs preferred lines, and green surrounds are closely mown to keep recovery options in play. The club has been active as a competitive venue, from historic professional events (LPGA in the 1950s; Senior PGA co-hosting in 1940–41) to modern USGA/FSGA qualifiers and the LPGA’s Symetra Tour (2012–2017). Recent restoration phases—most notably in 2018 and follow-on work in 2022—were explicitly keyed to Donald Ross’s 1926 drawings, with the aim of re-establishing original green sizes, re-setting bunkers to strategic locations, and restoring optical effects lost to prior renovations.
