Black Mountain Golf Course

Black Mountain Golf Course is the Town of Black Mountain's municipal course, set beside Lake Tomahawk at the foot of the Black Mountain Range, seventeen miles east of Asheville. It is open to the public every day except Christmas, with tee times bookable online up to seven days ahead. The front nine is credited to Donald Ross. The back nine was added in the 1960s and holds the par-6 17th, which the town promoted as the world's longest hole when it opened in 1964. The holes wind through town streets and neighbourhoods, among trees, creeks and changes of elevation, and greens sit close to the next tees. The club says the course is as enjoyable to walk as to ride, and walking is allowed after 1 p.m. Sand is used sparingly: the first five holes have five bunkers between them. There is a practice green but no driving range, a pro shop remodelled after Tropical Storm Helene, and the Green Tee Grille. Standard 2026 rates run from $35 to walk 18 holes on a weekday to $70 with a cart at weekends, with annual and player's passes. A women's golf association plays twice a week in season, local groups hold charity tournaments, and the course normally sees 30,000 to 33,000 rounds a year. Helene closed it for nine months in 2024 and 2025. The back nine reopened in June 2025 and the front nine in September 2026, when the course returned to 18 holes.
